Chippenham - was founded over 1,000 years ago when Alfred the Great positioned his hunting lodge there to pursue the invading Danes. The river Avon winds gently through the town centre and through Monkton Park, a peaceful oasis in the centre of this bustling town. In and around the market place you will find the ancient Buttercross, magnificent St Andrew’s Church, architectural gems in St Mary’s Street and the 15th century Yelde Hall, now home to Chippenham Tourist Information Centre.
