Devizes – a bustling, thriving historic market town with over 500 listed buildings within a quarter of a square mile. It still hosts a weekly market – on Thursdays. It is the home of the Moonrakers, local smugglers who fooled the excise men by hiding their booty in the town pond, known as the Crammer. When asked on a moonlit night why they were raking in the pond – to recover their illicit goods – they replied that they were trying to catch the moon - reflected in the water. The excise men thought they were all mad and went on their way. It is also the home to a very well known local brewery, Wadsworth, famous for its 6X beer.
