Lacock – the Abbey was founded in 1232 by Ela, Countess of Salisbury as a nunnery for Augustinian canonesses. The fine cloister court and several medieval quarters remain in existence today. After the Dissolution, Henry VIII sold the Abbey to William Sharington who, in 1539 began work to transform it into a family home. In the mid 19th century William Henry Fox Talbot remodelled the south elevation and added three new oriel windows, one of which was used as the subject in the first known example of a photographic negative. Miss Matilda Talbot donated Lacock Abbey, together with most of the village, Manor Farm and Bewley common to the National Trust between 1944 and 1946. The village is frequently used for film and television period dramas. It has some lovely old inns with salivation inducing menus. Adjacent to the Abbey is the Fox Talbot museum.
